ell, I have just come back from Switzerland where I did some skiing and enjoyed some highly needed R&R in the spa. Lots of fresh snow, unfortunately not a lot of sun…. and after this overdose of winter white landscapes, snowcapped mountains and wooden chalets I am now definitely ready for spring!
Jonathan Adler: I am sure for most of you in the States this Designer Star is by now a household name. However, this potter and (interior) designer is not very known in Europe yet. This could be due to the fact that we Europeans are not (yet) used to his signature style of bright colors and glam, seventies style pop culture inspired furniture.
lack and white art is a great way to add texture and interest to any interior, be it classic or modern. I currently have a crush on Franz Klein (1910-1962), an American painter who happened to be good friends that other abstract painter, my fellow Dutch national Willem de Kooning. Klein is mostly known for his later work, abstract compositions in black and white.
ave you heard of furniture company Brabbu Design Forces yet? You almost cannot have missed them, as they are everywhere lately. Open any interior magazine, European, American, Russian or Chinese and there will usually be some item by Brabbu listed in an editorial somewhere.
s you may have noticed, for me the Color of the Month Violet is IT. I have changed the color of my logo to a violet shade, and I have used the color in my latest visuals as well. This cool shade, somewhere between blue and purple, speaks to me in this cold time of the year.
oul Kjaerholm (1929-1980) is the creator of the famous PK22 chair, that elegant minimal structure of steel and leather which we see so often in all those beautiful interiors circulating on the net. This chair, created in 1956, was the big breakthrough for Kjaerholm. Its design won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957 which brought him instant fame. But there is so much more to Kjaerholm’s work.
oday I am sharing my latest computer-generated visualisation project: a Mid Century interior in a classic city apartment. Some of the furniture is vintage, some of it is new (but inspired on Mid Century design) and some of the pieces I designed myself, such as the dining table and the Sputnik Chandelier.
n my earlier post on Dark Decor, I posted an image of a large ceramic stove in the Et Hem Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden. I was quite intrigued by this huge, beautiful contraption so I decided to do some research on it. It turns out that this kind of stove is called a “Kakelugn”, Swedish for a tiled stove.
