all has started, temperatures are dropping and wood stoves or fireplaces are taking a lead-role again this time of year. One of the benefits of a wood stove versus an open fireplace, is that wood stoves radiate a lot more warmth. That’s why you see a lot more stoves, as opposed to open fireplaces, in the colder countries in the Northern hemisphere (think Scandinavia, Canada).
Also, wood burns a lot longer in a wood stove, making it the more economical and ecological choice. Installing a wood stove is easily done, as you do not need an existing chimney. Just hack a hole in the wall and put the pipe through it. It’s as simple as that! Masonry work to create a new chimney involves a lot more alterations to a structure, creating lots of hassle, headaches and expenses.
In general, open fireplaces are more in demand, as they tend to be more pleasing to the eye. But I think that the collection of wood stoves in this post will change your mind. In my opinion, they can be a great addition to any interior, be it contemporary, modern, classic or country interiors. Companies like the French Focus-Creation or the Australian Oblica make great minimal wood stoves. The Norwegian Jotul company produce the somewhat more classic wood stoves. What would you go for, a fireplace or a stove?

Eén van de voordelen van een houtkachel in plaats van een open haard, is dat een houtkachel veel meer warmte uitstraalt. Dat is ook één van de redenen waarom je zoveel houtkachels ziet in de koude, noordelijke landen (zoals Scandinavië of Canada).
Bovendien brandt hout een stuk langer in een houtkachel. Dit maakt de keuze voor een houtkachel dan ook veel economischer en ecologischer. Een houtkachel is heel makkelijk te plaatsen, je hebt geen bestaande schoorsteen nodig. Hak gewoon een gat in de muur en steek de pijp hier doorheen naar buiten. Klaar is Kees! Metselwerk om een nieuwe schoorsteen te maken in een bestaande constructie vraagt om, vaak grote, aanpassingen. En dat betekent ook een hoop gedoe, hoofdpijn en kosten.
Over het algemeen zie je meer open haarden dan houtkachels. Een open vuur is natuurlijk altijd fijn. Maar ik denk dat de verzameling houtkachels in deze post je wel van gedachte zou kunnen veranderen. Als je het mij vraagt, kunnen ze een aanwinst zijn voor welk interieur dan ook: contemporary, modern, klassiek of country cottage etc. Bedrijven zoals het franse Focus-Creation of het Australische Oblica maken prachtige, simpele houtkachels. Het Noorse bedrijf Jotul produceert de wat meer klassieke houtkachels. Wat zou jij kiezen, een houtkachel of een open haard?
