The Utrecht chair is a design of Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld. And although the design dates back to 1935, this chair is still being used by interior designers all over the world for high-end projects.
DESIGN ICONS
Design Icon Hans Wegner is of course not to be missed in my Design Icons series. He was the driving force behind the “Danish Modern” movement and helped change the general public view of furniture during the 1950’s and 60’s. During his lifetime he designed more than 500 chairs, which earned him the title “Master of the Chair”. A few of his most well-known designs are, amongst others, the Wishbone Chair, the Bear Chair and the Ox Chair.
Mid Century sideboards are one of my things these days. Those high-quality sleek, minimal cupboards made of precious woods like walnut, rosewood or teak are not only aesthetic to the eye, but so handy and practical as well. Great for creating a vignette of your current favourite things, practical for storing your mess out of sight.
he Panton Chair, also known as the S-chair, has been around since the 1960’s. It is a creation of the Danish multi-talent Vernon Panton. Panton is considered to be one of Denmark’s influential 20th Century furniture and interior designers. He worked mostly with plastics in bright and exotic colors.
orman Cherner is the mastermind behind those elegant and shapely chairs made of curved plywood, also known as the Cherner Chairs (and not to be confused with the similar Pretzel Chairs by George Nelson). The Cherner Chair was originally launched in 1958 by US company Plycraft and stayed in production until 1970.
id Century Modern is what I want to talk about today. Wow, I cannot believe it has been such a long time since my last post, more than a month has passed. The reason for this lacuna is a huge amount of visualisation work I have done for a project developer. For which I did the digital interior design as well.
he Diamond Chair, also known as the Bertoia Chair, was one of the important innovations in furniture design during the 1950’s. It was designed by American artist Harry Bertoia, born in Italy in 1915. At age 15 he emigrated with his brother from Italy to Detroit. He enrolled in the Cass Technical High School where he studied art and design.
ladimir Kagan is the designer of many enduring pieces of Mid Century furniture and he is still going strong today. I came to know him through his iconic Serpentine sofa and I fell in love instantly, such an elegant and timeless design. But the velvet Erica chaise above also took my breath away, so seductive and glamorous.
reta Grossman (1906-1999) was, in an era when few women earned public acclaim for their accomplishments, one of the leading figures in the design world. During the 1940’s- and 50’s she enjoyed the spotlight in numerous publications in newspapers and sophisticated lifestyle magazines focussing on her designs ranging from industrial, interior and architecture. Her work was exhibited in museums worldwide, including the MoMa in New York and The National Museum in Stockholm.
