love winter plaids. They are an absolute necessity in my home. Being of the shivery type, and having lived in hot South Africa for a few years, I am still not used to the wintry damp cold of The Netherlands. Up to now it hasn’t been too bad (thank you Global Warming), but I know that the cold rainy days are not far away.
And what’s better than after arriving home, frozen and wet from a bycicle ride into town (yes, we Dutch girls ride our bikes come sunshine or rain) to have a hot bath and cuddle up in one of these lovely warm winter plaids? A good friend of me produces some exceptional, ultra-soft plaids made from 100% wool (no dye and eco-friendly!) sourced from as far as Peru, Mongolia and the Himalayas. He produces according to the World Fairtrade Organisation, empowering the local farmers and artisans towards a better life. Alpaca, cashmere, merino or even plaids made of wool from Yak (sort of an Asian water buffalo) are available via his company Yumeko. And yes, they do ship abroad. I ben gek op winter plaids. Ik zou niet zonder ze kunnen. Ik ben namelijk nogal een koukleum, en na mijn jaren in warm Zuid Afrika ben ik nog steeds niet gewend aan de Nederlandse winterse, natte kou. Tot nu toe viel het allemaal nog wel mee (dankje Broeikaseffect), maar ik weet dat die natte herfstdagen er aan zitten te komen, brrr.
En wat is er beter, nadat je helemaal bevroren en nat bent thuisgekomen van een fietstochtje naar de stad, dan een heerlijk warm bad om daarna weg te kruipen in één van deze superzachte winter plaids? Een goede vriend van mij maakt prachtige, superzachte en eco-vriendelijke plaids van 100% ongeverfde wol. Hij produceert volgens de normen van de World Fairtrade Organisation, waardoor de lokale boeren en ambachtslieden een eerlijke prijs krijgen voor hun producten. De wol voor zijn plaids komt uit Peru, Mongolië en zelfs de Himalayas.
