Dark kitchens are on my mind right now. I am doing a project creating visuals for a huge townhouse here in Amsterdam. This house will have a summer kitchen and a winter kitchen. I’m thinking of making the winter kitchen dark and cosy. Not sure yet whether it will be industrial, modern rustic or classic chic so I have been collecting imagery for all three styles.
Typical characteristics for industrial styled dark kitchens are materials such as steel and concrete. Cabinetry with large handles, reminiscent of the factories in the “olden days”. Salvaged suspension light fixtures with steel shades. Everything a bit rough, open shelves filled with china and glassware, topping it off with a large professional pull-out water tap.
Modern Rustic kitchens are usually made of rough concrete paired with unfinished woods like for example oak. You are trying to create a farmhouse feel. Preferably, the space has some ancient exposed beams. Accessesories such as baskets, handblown glass vases, some fur skins here and there thrown over a dining chair and a simple chandelier.
But since this house has such classic bones, I will probably go for minimal chic. Sleek dark cabinets with invisible handles combined with black or white marble, some bronze accents here and there and a discrete watermixer. A minimal amount of visible kitchen utensils seeking the effect of “less is more”.
Once this project is finished I will let you know which style is has evolved into. In the meantime, enjoys these dark kitchens, I hope you get inspired.
