Ggallery walls can be a great way to display your art. Consisting of a delicate balance of mismatched-organisation, you have to be careful not to make a mess of it. Ideally, gallery walls will grow organically, starting with one piece and adding to it over time. But if that is not the case, certain guidelines apply if you want to do it right:

  • try to collect a selection of art that is more or less color-coordinated. To me, a collection of black and white art makes a strong statement.
  • collect a mix of modern and vintage art, drawings, paintings, photographs or even maps and add something else to the mix, like wall sculptures, vintage enamel sign boards, ethnic woodcarved panels or an African tribal mask.
  • try to mix the framesize and form: square, round, oval, hexagonal etc. But a wall full of similar-sized frames also makes a strong impression.
  • try to mix new and antique frames and also mix material: light/dark wood, guilded gold, ornamental or plain etc.

TIP TO ORGANISE GALLERY WALLS

Make a 2D plan: cut a small piece of paper which will represent each frame or other artwork. Then mix them around on a larger piece of “base” paper which represents the wall.  If applicable, you can even draw a sofa or whatever other furniture you have on the base paper. You can now shuffle your art around until you have a perfect composition. Next, hang your art accordingly.

Another way to create a gallery wall is to screw a few shelves to your wall and just display your art on them. Perfect if you want to make changes frequently, ergo no ugly holes in the wall.

Below a few gallery walls that I really really like. Would love to hear your thoughts on gallery walls.
