ANTLERS: TIRED OR INSPIRED?

I know, antlers mounted on the wall are a favourite design staple of many designers and stylists. Especially with christmas nearing, I’m sure we will see them around a lot again. But I think we may have seen enough of them. When this trend hit interior-land a few years ago, it hit hard.  Antlers mounted on the walls of country houses situated in hunting territories are an obvious choice. The same goes for wooden ski-chalets in snowy mountainous areas.

But don’t you think that antlers in city appartment blocks look a bit odd and “out of place”? And what do you think of the use of antlers for decor items such as a center piece for the table, light-fixtures or just as an ornament on the mantelpiece? Kitsch or cool? Mmmmm, I guess I have to think this one over a few more times… would love to hear your thoughts.

By the way, antlers and horns are used interchangeably, but did you know they are actually two different things? Antlers grow on male deer, they are a pair of bony, branched structures that are shed each year. Horns grow on antelope and cattle. They also grow in pairs, but they have no branches. They are permanent and grow larger each year.

Ik weet het, geweien aan de muur, ze zijn een favoriet voor veel interieur designers en stylisten. Vooral nu kerstmis nadert weet ik zeker dat we ze weer veel zullen zien. Maar ik denk dat de geweien-trend wel eens zijn beste tijd kan hebben gehad. Toen deze trend een paar jaar geleden zijn intrede deed in interieur-land, was hij niet meer weg te denken. Geweien in landhuizen op jachtterreinen zijn een vanzelfsprekendheid. Net zoals ze dat ook zijn in ski-chalets in een besneeuwde bergomgeving.

Maar is het eigenlijk niet een beetje raar om een gewei op te hangen in een stadsappartement? En wat vind je van het gebruik van geweien voor decoraties? Zoals een tafelornament of een kroonluchter of als decoratie op de schoorsteenmantel? Kisch of cool? Mmmmmm, ik weet het nog niet helemaal, zou graag jouw gedachten horen.

Trouwens: geweien en hoorns worden vaak als één en hetzelfde gezien. Maar wist je dat ze eigenlijk heel verschillend zijn? Geweien groeien met twee tegelijk op mannetjes-herten. Als ze volgroeid zijn, zijn ze bot-achtig en hebben een vertakte vorm. Ieder jaar vallen ze af en groeit er weer een nieuw gewei. Hoorns groeien bij antilopen en vee (zoals koeien, schapen en geiten).  Ze groeien ookj als paar, maar hoorns hebben geen vertakkingen. Ze blijven altijd zitten en worden ieder jaar groter.
